Dog Collar Size Guide

My collars are sold by length (excluding the buckle), so please use this guide to help you order the best fit for your dog.
First you will need to take a comfortable measurement of your dog's neck where the collar will lie, then for

All Buckled collar styles :-

Add 4″ / 10cm (or add 5" / 13cm for collars will a padded lining) which will give the length you need to order for a comfortable fit on the centre hole, allowing for some adjustment both ways.
For younger puppies, add 5" / 13cm (or add 6" / 15cm for collars with a padded lining), which will give the length you need to order. This should fit on the tightest of the holes to start with and allow the most extra length for growth.

For Flat and Rolled Slip collars:-

Lengths referred to are the length of leather between the rings, not neck size so be sure to allow enough extra to pass the collar comfortably over your dog’s head! For most dogs this is usually around 4″ (10cm) longer than the dog’s neck measurement, but try it out with a loop of string first! You may need extra length for dogs with much larger heads.

For half-choke collars:-

The choices are for the length of the leather only. You need to choose a length which will be at least 2″ (5cm) less than your dog’s neck circumference measured at the narrowest part of the dog’s neck; this is normally near the top of the neck behind the ears where this type of collar should be placed for best effect. The chain will make up the extra distance and provide extra control, as it tightens the collar.
The light and medium weight chains add an extra 5″ (12.5cm), the heavy chains will add 5.5" (14cm) when fully extended.

For example, if your dog’s neck measures 12″ (30cm), you probably need to order 10″ length in the non-adjustable rolled or  sight-hound half chokes or 8″ -12″ in the adjustable half choke collar. Make sure that the chosen size can pass comfortably over your dog’s head & ears – try it out with a loop of string! Some breeds with large heads will need to have the opening buckle adjustable style to achieve the correct fit.
For non-adjustable half-choke Hound collars with a padded lining, please allow 1" / 2.5cm longer for the collar. For example if your hound's neck measures 12", order 10" length without padded lining or 11" with.

Most pups will have done the bulk of their growing by around 9 or 10 months old and you may then be able to buy their 'adult' collar. It's not a precise science but this usually works out right! If you need help with sizes, please contact me.​
